As we all know, eating low carb can be super satisfying in the long run. And what better way to start your day than with Keto Biscuits and Gravy? OMG- this Keto version of the classic is going to be a recipe you go back to again and again.
Biscuits and gravy usually start making their return to breakfast and dinner tables when the weather starts to chill and the Pumpkin Spice recipes craze returns.
And, this dish is amazing with some of the Fall faves like these Keto “Hash-browns” or Corned Beef Keto Hash.
How to Make Keto Friendly Biscuits and Gravy
You should start off right by making the biscuits first. You can save time by making the gravy while they are in the oven. Plus, low carb, gluten free biscuits are very tender when they first come out of the oven and need to cool for a bit.
Don’t worry though, the piping hot gravy will warm them right back up.
Making the Keto biscuits:
The biscuits are a fathead type, cheese based biscuit and the flavor profile goes perfectly with the sausage gravy. They don’t taste cheesy and the cheddar (or whatever cheese you like) helps the low carb flour bind better.
Keto Biscuits ingredients:
- Eggs
- Coconut Flour
- Melted Butter
- Shredded cheese – cheddar
- Baking powder
Baking instructions:
- Preheat the oven to 400F.
- Mix all of the biscuit ingredients together.
- Drop two tablespoons of batter for each biscuit onto an oiled parchment covered cookie sheet for each biscuit ~ making twelve small biscuits spaced 2 inches apart.Bake int he oven for 12 minutes or until brown.
- Start your gravy while the biscuits are baking.
Making the Sausage Gravy
I make this gravy with Almond milk and occasionally heavy cream.
I find that the almond milk cuts down on the dairy, calories (and stomach issues) since the biscuits also are a cheese base.
Other recipe developers say almond milk won’t work but it DOES. Promise.
Keto gravy ingredients:
- Breakfast Sausage Roll
- Butter
- Almond Milk or heavy cream (amounts stay the same)
- Cream Cheese
- Xanthan Gum – optional but important if you are going the almond milk route.
- Pepper
Browning the meat
Why would there be a section on browning the meat? I mean, it seems simple right?
But, if you really want that Southern flavor to shine through, make sure you really BROWN the meat. Not just until it’s that grey color that sausage gets. REALLY BROWN IT.
And, scrape the bits off of the bottom of the pan (de-glaze) when you pour in the almond milk or cream.
Gravy Instructions:
- While you are waiting for your biscuits to bake ~ add the butter to a medium sauce pan.
- Brown the sausage in the butter. Let it get browned. Those little browned bits are key in the gravy’s taste.
- Add the milk, cream cheese and Xanthan gum if using.
- Add pepper and let simmer until cream cheese is melted and the gravy thickens while you are waiting for your biscuits to bake.
When should I eat Keto biscuits and gravy?
Any ol time you want! But, it’s a heavy meal and since we do a lot of intermittent fasting, we usually choose this meal for dinner instead of breakfast.
However, it’s great for Sunday morning or any brunch type of situation.
Reheating your keto sausage gravy and biscuits:
If you are making this ahead of time you can just reheat it in the microwave. During the beginning years of Keto, we used to freeze food but we do so less often now because there are so many QUICK recipes (like this one).
But, if you want….
You can freeze the gravy and biscuits separate in individual portions and let them thaw in the fridge. Reheat in the microwave AFTER thawing.
Nutrition panel:
This is no itty bitty type of two bite serving: This is the nutritional info for two biscuits and 3/4 cup of gravy made as described with the almond milk. (You’re welcome).
Serving: 2Bicuits with gravy | Calories: 639kcal | Carbohydrates: 6g | Protein: 24g | Fat: 57g | Sodium: 1030mg | Fiber: 3g | Net Carbs: 3g | Fat Ratio per Serving: 80.28% | Protein Ratio per Serving: 15.02% | Carb Ratio per Serving: 1.88%
How many carbs per serving?
Yeah, yeah, carbs are the biggest indicator of a recipes “Keto-worthiness” and this recipe has about 3 grams of Net Carbs.
But, if you choose to use heavy cream instead of almond milk, don’t forget about the added calories. Calories still count on Keto.
How to serve Keto gravy and biscuits?
Slice two biscuits in half if you’re fancy, or crumble them up if you’re like me and pour 3/4 of a cup on top. Enjoy.
It might seem silly or even condescending to provide these instructions but there are some people (my MIL) who have never had biscuits and gravy before. GASP right?
Substitutions:
In case you missed it you can make some substitutions:
Almond milk: Sub in the same amount of heavy cream. If you want to go totally dairy free you can add more almond milk and xanthan gum while skipping the cream cheese.
I haven’t tried this so I am not sure how much.
Cheddar Cheese: Use and equal amount of mozzarella for a more neutral flavor.
Your Kids Aren’t Keto?
Mine either. Make some quick Bisquick Biscuits or whatever they like and they’ll still LOVE this gravy. Easy peasy.
Tips And Hints
Make it spicy: add some red pepper flakes to the gravy.
Make it a complete meal: add a fried egg and some kind of fiber (veggies) and you are good to go.
In case you missed it, brown the sausage really well to get that Southern goodness going on in the gravy.
Cheers!

Hi There!
Almond flour and coconut flour absorb liquid very differently. You would be better off using a different biscuit recipe like this one. They still contain 2 tbsp of coconut flour but you can easily sub in 1/4 cup of almond flour to replace it. Please let me know if you have any questions about this and I hope your biscuits turn out great! Cheers!
Can you use almond flour instead of coconut ?
Yep…cow juice lol.
Cow juice?!
Hey Janette!
