Keto Ketchup (5)

Keto Ketchup needs no introduction. Most people either love ketchup or hate it.

But I think one thing we can all agree on is that the store bought version of regular tomato ketchup can knock you out of Ketosis in a hurry.

Sure, there are some sugar free alternatives in most stores today but most of them contain sucralose which isn't great for you. You can read about the good, the bad and the ugly low carb sweeteners here...

Make this instead...you won't be sorry.

The Keto Ketchup Ingredients:

  • 1 tablespoon olive oil
  • ½ cup yellow onion finely chopped

If you don't have an onion or want to go the easy route, just use dehydrated onion or powdered onion instead.

You can check out the substitution ratios here if you don't want to "wing it" with my "to taste" suggestion. I know that not everyone like to roll like that.

  • 1 teaspoon garlic powder
  • 2 tablespoon tomato paste
  • ⅓ cup red wine vinegar
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 1 bay leaf
  • 1 teaspoon paprika powder
  • 1 teaspoon ground coriander
  • ½ teaspoon ground clove
  • ½ teaspoon ground black pepper
  • 1 pinch cayenne pepper
  • 14 oz. canned tomatoes
  • 3 tablespoon Allulose or whatever sweetener you like.

We recommend allulose because it isn't made with mystery chemicals.

But if for some reason, you can't use it you can check out this post about low carb sweeteners. It goes over the good, the bad and the ugly side effects of each of them.

It also contains some cool candy recipes for your candy cravings.

The Keto Ketchup Instructions:

  • Fry the onion, and garlic in oil for a couple of minutes over medium heat in a nonstick saucepan. The onion should become translucent. Do not brown.
  • Add vinegar, tomato paste, bay leaf, spices and canned tomatoes.
  • Stir and lower the heat. Simmer over low for about 20 minutes. Remove the bay leaf.
  • Let cool for a few minutes and blend until smooth. Taste and add more salt, fresh ground black pepper or vinegar as needed.
  • Depending on how thick you want your Keto ketchup to be, you can let it simmer longer over low heat. Store in the fridge for 10- 12 days or do a canning bath to preserve.

That's it for the Keto Ketchup!

Homemade Ketchup is delicious...

If you are missing any of the ingredients you can look for substitutes. And, if you like your ketchup spicy...add extra cayenne. It's an amazing spice that I just can never get enough of.

If you have never made your own sauces this can seem a bit overwhelming. But it's worth it. Store bought sauces can't compare. Plus you have the peace of mind that knowing what's in it is healthy.

You can find recipes for just about any store bought sauce online as well as the directions for home canning. It's not hard, can be done in one afternoon and last for a year or more.

It might even be a nice gift idea.

I know it's difficult to find time to cook dinner sometimes let alone find the time to make every darn thing your family eats.

But with a little planning it's totally doable, especially now that we are spending so much time at home!

As always, I hope that you enjoy it and leave a comment or question below if you need any help or just want to say hi!

Cheers!

Don't want to make your own?

Sugar free everything is slowly becoming available and you can buy sugar free ketchup if you don't want to make it. I can't buy it in my local grocery store out here in the sticks but I have seen it here....

Even if you can buy it locally, I would check out the prices. Anything that even has a hint of being a trend in health foods costs a premium in my local Safeway store. And, you should check the label to make sure all of the ingredients align with your health goals.

Unfortunately, gone are the days when we could trust the FDA to protect us by only allowing us to eat food. They now approve tons of nasty chemicals for the masses to consume and I can only guess why....

Again, I haven't checked out any of the store bought, sugar free options because this one is so easy to make. Plus it lasts a long time so it's not like I have to do it every day.
